As a business owner I’m all about finding ways to be as efficient and effective as possible when putting my time into anything including when I’m on Pinterest. One of the ways to do that is through board contributors. It is an effective way to leverage Pinterest and social media marketing campaigns.

1. What are board contributors?

They are Pinterest users who are allowed to pin on a specific board.

2. What are the key benefits for your business?

  • increased exposure & visibility

  • dramatically increase your followers

Remember that the more followers you have the more likely they & their followers are going to see your content, repin your pins and click through to your website. This leads to increase traffic to your site and potentially more subscribers and customers. This is the launching pad of having something go viral. This is one of your goals with social media marketing.

  • it’s a great way to organize things

  • it brings people together creating a sense of community

  • you have others contributing content which saves you time and energy

  • you elevate the pinners to the role of brand ambassadors which their followers will take note of

  • gives you insight to what consumers want & need by analyzing which images followers engage with the most

  • helps you determine future marketing initiatives and product development

  • helps makes your brand appear more approachable

3. Who should I invite to contribute?

Naturally you want to get in front of as many potential customers as possible so here are some places to start with:

  • existing customers

  • staff and everyone else in your company

  • reach out to bloggers in your industry

  • your email contacts and other social networks

4. What do Board Contributors look like?

You will see a symbol of a group of people next to the board title

5. How to create a group board?

Be polite, friendly and set some rules or guidelines:

  • welcome contributors
  • state the benefits of being a contributor
  • explain what pins are allowed
  • remind them there is no spamming or pinning of unrelated content
  • add your Pinterest URL
  • encourage them to invite their friends to be contributors
  • set concise guidelines for appropriate content

6. How do you add board contributors?

  • you must follow at least one of the person’s boards in order to invite him/her (This rule has now changed as of August 2013: A Pinterest user must follow at least one of your boards for you to invite them)
  • you can select the names you want to add as board contributors
  • the person you invited will receive an email invitation from you as a board contributor

The invitation will also show up on the left side bar of your Pinterest feed called “Group Board Invitations”.

7. What happens when you follow a group board?

  • once you follow a group board, you will see all the pins that are currently on that board

  • any new pins that pinners add to the group will appear on your Pinterest feed

  • if you come across any inappropriate pins and spam you can advise the board creator by commenting on the actual pin (watch video tutorial on how to report a pin)

  • when you follow a group board that board will automatically go on your Pinterest page as one of your boards

  • some groups can literally have thousands of contributors and every time they pin you will get an email notification

To avoid email overload s go to “SETTINGS”, click “Email Notifications” and use the on/off slider to choose your preference.

8. How can your business use group boards effectively?

Collaboration: create a board if you’re working with other people (employees, co-workers) on a specific project. For example if you want to create a new sales training program for your company encourage your employees to be part of the solution. They could pin information about what their challenges are and so forth. Social media marketing tools can be used in many ways for many different types of projects.

Planning: this is a no brainer for interior decorators. Invite the stakeholders to join your group board to pin images of their favorite furniture, room layout, design, colour themes, etc.

Focus group: ask your customers to pin images of products and services they would like you to add.

Promotion: ask your employees and customers to give you ideas on the types of contests to run and suggestions for prizes.

9. Tips

  • monitor your board contributors once a week to make sure there are no spamming or unrelated pins.

  • if you’ve been invited to a group board be selective. As a business you want to make sure that the theme of the group board compliments with your overall content strategy.

  • encourage pinners to join your group board by adding a line or two about how they would benefit from being part of the group board.

  • make sure to add rules of engagement on the board description to warn spammers.

  • add your pinterest URL address on the board description.

  • using a phone or tablet?  Right now, you can’t create group boards in the app or invite/remove other pinners. You can accept and ignore invitations in the iPad, iPhone, and Android app.

10. How to manage & monitor your group boards?

  • you may get spam or irrelevant content on your group board so you’ll want to remove the pin or the contributor from your board (watch video tutorial)

11. How to leave a group board?

  • if you’re not happy with the content that you’ve been receiving from the group board you can easily resign from it. (watch video tutorial)

What has been your experience with group boards? What would you add to this list? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this and social media marketing in general so please post your comment below.

 Thank you!
